Managed to sleep through to 4am-quite an achievement as we went to bed at midnight. Taxi to Rome railway station, trying to avoid the armies of gypsies, pickpockets and thieves.
Onto the train and thank God I only had to lift the suitcases weighing 29Kg onto the overhead rack. Others in the compartment were very helpful with advice as they watched me struggle with this Sisyphean task.I explained to the young lady sitting underneath the case that she had nothing to fear because if it did slip off , death would be instant and would not be associated with any sort of discomfort or pain. We have been warned that as the train would be stopping in Naples that we would inevitably be robbed and if we left there with our gold fillings still intact that this would be a bonus.
We arrive at Salerno and then catch the ferry to Amalfi; luckily I had booked this 6 months ahead as there was only about 200 vacant seats on board.
Amalfi is a quiet town and fortunately this is the off season for tourism, however unfortunately nobody mentioned this to the 50 thousand Eurotrash tourists who have descended on this delightful town.
Dinner at La Caravella which deserves its Michelin star.
