"What goes down must always come up"
-Old Amalfian proverb.
Today was the first day of serious walking and as our hotel was at sea level and we had no scuba gear ascending was going to be the order of the day. It all seemed so easy initially and then the series of steps began, each one steeper and longer than the previous.
What is wrong with these Amalfionians, haven't they ever heard of escalators? Time to move into the 20th century boys. So on and on we struggled manfully into the death zone with only the thought of how our ANZAC forebears would have coped(and maybe also the promise of lunch). As we wended our way through narrow passages we thought of the hardships endured by the men who have to deliver grand pianos here.
Eventually we reached the pretty town of Ravello(named after a Marx brother character) and fighting our way through the hordes of Ravellations we end up in the town of Pontone and then a round trip to an ancient fort overlooking Amalfi
and then back to Pontone for a light lunch.
After lunch it is downhill all the way to Amalfi passing disused paper mills.
We stop off for some homemade lemonade and then back to our digs where we collapse.
We rouse ourselves in order to partake of some victuals.
We now realise that trying to match calories in to calories out is going to be a challenge but we will give it a red hot go.
